Q: I live in a muddy and wet environment, during part of the year, how well does the cast holdup? Will a cast loose its integrity? Do I need to do anything special if my horse is standing in mud?
A: Excessive moisture should always be of concern especially when horses are standing in mud a majority of the time. They are more prone to hoof wall problems like thrush, scratches, bacterial and fungus problems so close monitoring of their feet and legs is critical. Equicast can help hoof wall integrity, BUT I suggest using a topical thrush medication like Koppertox be painted onto the sole area and bottom of the cast at least three times a week. I recommend using only a circumference cast when horses are standing in mud, the integrity of Equicast will not be adversely affected, however you my notice that the cast don’t last quite as long as in a dry environment.
Cleaning your horse's feet out really well at least three times a week will be time well spent during extreme wet periods you will be rewarded with nice clean legs and feet after a wet and muddy season.
